To train speed, you need to be able to run fast again

THREE IDEAS TO REMEMBER

The essentials

  • Decide whether you want speed or repeated-effort endurance.
  • Rest protects the quality of the next attempt.
  • Do not copy advanced jumps or sprints without a foundation.

Two sessions that can look alike

Running from cone to cone does not define what you are training. The goal, distance, recovery and sustainable speed all change. A sequence of progressively slower runs can accumulate plenty of effort, but tells you something different from fast, comparable attempts.

FIFA's guidance on explosiveness emphasises quality, low volume and ample recovery when the goal is fast actions. It also places this work at times without substantial fatigue and calls for adaptation to the athlete's foundation. This is preparation guidance, not an invitation to try maximal efforts without supervision.

AT A GLANCE

Clarify the goal

Clarify the goal
IdeaWhat it means
SpeedFast attempts with preparation and recovery.
Repeated effortsA specific work pattern for repeating actions.
TechniqueConditions that let you observe the movement.
ControlThe block ends when it stops serving its goal.

Plan the space first

Before looking at the stopwatch, check the surface, starting area and space needed to slow down. In a shared park, a clear stretch can become busy within seconds. Running fast requires an appropriate place with visibility and no pedestrian or bicycle crossings; if you do not have one, change the task.

An example of monitoring an already prescribed session: use the same start, distance and measurement method. Note how each attempt finished and whether the movement remained consistent. Do not compare a hand-timed result with one from an electronic timing gate as though they were equivalent. Measurement should reveal trends, not manufacture precision.

Decide when the block ends

Agree with your coach which signs mean you should extend rest, reduce the demands or stop: a clear loss of quality, difficulty repeating the action or discomfort. Avoid chasing one spectacular repetition after several deteriorating attempts.

If you also need repeated-running endurance, reserve a block for that purpose with a different amount and pattern of work. Naming both goals helps avoid confusing them. Football and basketball involve many fast actions, but the programme must fit technical training and matches. Arriving fresh for a priority task is part of planning too.
