Your first personal training assessment in Valencia: what to expect
What to prepare, which questions to ask and how the free introductory call differs from a €50 assessment or coached session.
Your first conversation with a personal trainer should make the next step clearer. You do not need to arrive with a perfect goal, fitness test results or a decision about a session pack. You need space to explain what you want, what you already do and what would make training practical.
If you are looking for personal training in Valencia in English, this guide explains how to prepare for that conversation with Sergio Dolz. It also separates three appointments that can sound similar: a free introductory call, a paid assessment with an initial plan and a coached training session.
Which first appointment do you actually need?
The starting point is a free phone or video call, without obligation. We discuss your circumstances and whether the service fits. You can ask about communication in English, locations, availability and costs before booking.
| Appointment | Purpose and price |
|---|---|
| Introductory phone or video call | Free. Discuss your goal and the suitable format. A workout or written programme is not included. |
| Full sports assessment and advice | €50. A separate appointment to review your starting point, provide practical advice and prepare an initial sports plan. |
| Individual training session | €50. A coached workout. Home visits have a separate price. |
Tell me which type of help you want. If you are still deciding, the free call is the place to clarify it. The English guide to prices and formats explains packs, home visits and monthly coaching.
Prepare five useful details
- Your main priority. Describe something that matters in daily life or sport: learning strength exercises, returning to a routine or organising training around a competition.
- Your recent activity. Include walking, classes, gym sessions and sports practice. Mention interruptions as well as the activities you enjoy.
- A realistic week. Think about appointments you could attend consistently, including travel time. A possible timetable is more useful than an ideal one.
- Your location and equipment. Explain whether you prefer Valencia’s Turia Gardens, home training subject to coverage, or online support.
- Anything that affects exercise. Mention relevant limitations or instructions from your healthcare team. Detailed medical reports do not belong in the initial website enquiry.
You can write these as five short notes on your phone. There is no need to buy equipment, complete an exhausting workout or collect measurements to make a good first impression. The conversation starts from your actual situation.
What should a useful assessment clarify?
It should connect your goal with a manageable starting point. Saying “I want to get fitter” is enough to open the conversation. We can make it more specific by asking what you would like to do more comfortably, which exercises you want to learn and what has made previous routines difficult to maintain.
Questions about experience and exercise suitability have a purpose. The American College of Sports Medicine includes initial consultation, screening before participation and fitness assessment in its personal trainer education resources. Assessment is part of planning; it is not a competition to see how much you can tolerate.
The exact practical checks depend on your goal and circumstances. We agree what is useful before doing it. A conversation about general fitness does not automatically require maximal strength tests, body photographs or a long battery of measurements. If clinical guidance is needed, that must come from the healthcare professional responsible for your care.
Agree how progress will be reviewed
Before starting, ask what we will pay attention to and when we will revisit the plan. Useful reference points can include attendance, confidence with selected exercises, training loads or your response to the week. The relevant choice depends on what you want to achieve.
A simple example: if your main problem is repeatedly abandoning complicated routines, the first question may be whether the agreed sessions fit your week. If you already train consistently, the discussion may focus on a particular exercise or sporting demand. These are examples of planning decisions, not promises of a fixed result or timescale.
Confirm the practical details before paying
Ask about session duration, the meeting point, equipment, availability and booking changes. For a pack, confirm the conditions and any expiry. For monthly coaching, clarify how plans, reviews and questions are handled; do not assume that every workout is supervised live.
In-person appointments take place in Valencia. Outdoor sessions use an agreed meeting point in the Turia Gardens; this is not a private studio with a reception desk. Home visits require confirmation of coverage and suitable space. Online coaching is an option when you live elsewhere or prefer to train independently with support.
Coaching is available in English or Spanish. I am a graduate in Physical Activity and Sport Sciences. You can read my professional background in Spanish before deciding whether the approach suits you.
Start with a clear first message
A useful message can be brief: “I live in Valencia, would like help with strength training and can usually train twice a week. I prefer English and would like to discuss outdoor sessions.” Add what matters to you; there is no need to decide on a package first.
